Why I Made a #MeToo Braceletby Ellen DuBois on 10/17/17
Still working out the hashtag on this bracelet, so it's for me. I didn't have a stamp so I engraved it. #metoo bracelet. When I was in college I had a part-time job and my breast was grabbed by one of the owners. It was a produce store and it happened right in the middle of an aisle. I might have been 20? I was shocked! Instinct took over and I hauled off and slapped him across the face. There were people around, mostly women. They were equally as shocked. I remember an older woman coming over to me, touching my arm and saying good for you, honey. He deserved it. It all happened so fast... but left such a deep impression on me that to this day I can recall exactly how degraded, violated, dirty and embarrassed I felt. After it happened, I carried on and finished the day. I never said anything and I really don't know why. Yes, I did slap him across the face in front of people and didn't even think about who saw it. But, I could have done more. I was 20. I didn't want to say anything because he was one of the owners, and that's a huge part of the problem. The fear that I could have lost my job or caused some sort of problem silenced me. Now that I'm older, I see that HE should have been fired, embarrassed and had absolutely no right to touch me at all. What he did was wrong and I, in NO way was responsible for his heinous actions against me. So, #metoo. If it happened again today, I would stand up. I'm standing up now. I get how it can be scary, especially if you really need a job to keep your place, feed your kids, whatever. So maybe, if we all stand together, anybody who is experiencing this or who has experienced this will find the strength to stand up because they will know they are not alone. They will not be abandoned and will be backed. I respect myself too much, have grown since I was 20 and know that he was in the wrong... not me! "We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing one another." - Luciano de Crescenzo If you would like me to make you one of these, you can choose your color, size, and let me know what your preferences are. I will gladly make one for you. As I said, the hashtag is engraved and the Me Too is hand stamped.
